DescriptionSkye, a Fae-shapeshifter halfing, could die if she doesn’t find out how to wake her dormant wolf, so mere rumors of the Wolf King’s return are enough to convince her to sneak through the portal between Faerie and Chicago in search of his aid. But the dizzyingly bright lights and sounds of the human realm are too tempting to ignore. So is the sexy shapeshifter wolf intent on capturing her—the one who stirs her sleeping wolf just long enough to bind the handsome stranger in a mate-bond.
Lake is willing to do anything to protect the Wolf King, a man he also calls friend. So when he receives word that a Fae princess has slipped into Chicago, he suspects a plot to assassinate the Wolf King. He’s certain capturing her will be as easy as locating her—that was his first mistake. Not only is his wolf a little too interested in Skye, but the wolf accepts her mate-bond without any say-so from him. As he unravels the truth surrounding the smart-mouthed princess and whether she’s hunting his friend or being hunted by someone else, Lake’s mission changes: protect Skye at all costs. And keep her for himself. ExcerptLake bit back a growl as his target exited a yellow taxi. A silver mini-dress floated over her body, barely covering her bottom as she leaned over and smiled at the driver who waved cheerily. Chicago taxi drivers generally weren’t the wave-goodbye-don’t-bother-paying-me types, so apparently the little princess wasn’t above using her Fae magic to get what she wanted. Lake’s lip lifted in a sneer even as his heart slammed. Christ, she was stunning, drawing every male’s eye with each sashaying step in those ridiculously high silver shoes. She strolled to the front of the line and was waved in by the bouncer after another dazzling smile. When the man turned and stared appreciatively at the little halfling Fae’s swinging backside, Lake’s wolf growled low and deep, urging him beat the human bouncer senseless.
With a muttered curse, he stalked around the corner and drew in long breaths to settle his wolf, his hands clenching and flexing by his side. Already annoyed to be chasing a petulant princess across the city, Lake didn’t need his wolf testing its limits right now. Perhaps he should call someone else in. His first choice would be Nathan, newly mate-bonded to the lovely Cass, but the revival of mate-bonding after an eight-hundred-year absence had rocked the wolf community and was still being examined. His second choice was no one. He should be guarding Tremont’s back, not stuck on babysitting duty. But he was here. The Fae King had offered his presence on the fledgling Council of Others, plus an open favor in exchange for Tremont sending his second-in-command, Lake, to find, protect, and train his daughter who had eluded the famed Fae Guard and sent herself through the Chicago portal. Not much was known about the Fae, but words like manipulative, ruthless, and deadly tended to be associated with them. If their lips were moving, they were deceiving—not actually lying since they were unable to do that, but pretzeling the truth beyond all recognition. “Why me?” Lake had asked at the hastily called meeting, his hand squeezing the hilt of his sword. King Elhi Naa turned his violet gaze to Lake. “You protect the Wolf King. You train those to protect the Wolf King. My daughter needs . . . guidance.” Tremont stiffened at the king’s word choice but didn’t interrupt him. Wolf King was a title his alpha and friend, Anton Tremont, rejected repeatedly and vigorously, but he was smart enough not to correct the Fae King. The Fae were inscrutable, their faces smooth, unreadable masks—that was part of the reason Lake, and others, distrusted them—but Lake had seen real pain in the king’s eyes. He took a deep breath and continued. “Skye is halfling, but her wolf wars with her Fae. I fear it is destroying her.” His voice was hoarse and the mask slipped revealing a flash of grief. King Naa’s emotion seemed real enough, but when he admitted his daughter had begged him to get her an audience with Tremont, alarm bells clanged in Lake’s head. AuthorAnna Kyle wrote her first story at age 12 on an old manual typewriter, and though the technology has changed, she hasn’t stopped since. She lives in the Midwest surrounded by family and friends and dogs and horses. They’ve forgiven her (mostly) when they appear in her stories. She reads everything she can get her hands on, but romances, especially paranormals, are her favorite. Vampires, humans, Fae, shapeshifters, or demons, it doesn’t matter—Anna’s heart goes pitter-pat for the Happily Ever After. Hot heroes + strong, funny heroines = awesome.
