Description

The magic barrier protecting the Taakwa from their enemies, the Maddion, is gone. Malia, who led the Taakwa against the Maddion in the Dragon War, must convince the magical being, the changer, to repair the barrier before the Maddion invade to take revenge on her people and the winged Jeguduns who also call the valley home, even if it means reversing the healing the changer wrought for her.

Chanwa, the wife of the Maddion leader, uses the disorder created by the changer to lead a coup against her husband in a desperate attempt to ensure she and the other Maddion women are treated as equals. Her life, and the future of every Maddion woman, depends on her success.

Both women know the only way to succeed is to come together in an unlikely alliance.

Excerpt

Chanwa took a deep breath. They were her sisters. They wouldn’t run off to Muvumo and report this conversation. They would, at worst, chastise her and leave, and perhaps avoid her for a long time.

She told them about the changer, about asking for help with making things better for Maddion women, about how Muvumo found her scrolls and accepted them initially only to have her burn them later. Her sisters gasped and grew wide-eyed when she mentioned that. She left out anything to do with Ankti. It felt too personal and too raw to share with them just yet.

“You’re lucky to be alive,” Prali said.

“See, that shouldn’t be so,” Chanwa said. “Things have to change.” When their mother was occupied, Nyda used to help teach Chanwa her letters. Sometimes they’d sneak away into the forest and use sticks to write in the dirt before wiping it all away. Nyda wrote an entire story on the hillside one time. It lasted for only moments when she was through, only long enough for Chanwa to read before Nyda erased it all. She still recalled the story of a brave little girl riding on dragonback. “Have either one of you taught your daughters their letters?”

Nyda’s little girl picked up a wooden spoon and began banging it against the low wooden table. She grinned at them and banged faster. Nyda said, “It’s too dangerous. And to what purpose? They’ll only grow up to get married and be kept home and have children anyway and have no use for any of it.” Bitterness crept into her voice.

“It’s more than that,” Chanwa said. “Women and girls have the right to learn, too. And we shouldn’t be treated as property to be destroyed or given away when we’re not serving someone else’s purpose.”

Nyda shuddered and glanced at the white door covering. “You’re talking about things that could get all of us killed. Or taken away from our children.”

“I have an idea. It wouldn’t get anyone killed—” except for maybe Chanwa, but she was willing to make that sacrifice “—and it would certainly get the men’s attention.”

“No, thank you,” Prali said, struggling to rise. “Nyda, get off your bum and help me up.”

Chanwa jumped to her feet first and pulled Prali up. “I know you’re scared,” she began. “But just hear me out.”

Praise

"This is the last part of the series, and I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how it was all going to come together in the end. It did, though, and I was left feeling exhilarated, satisfied, and emotionally spent. It is absolutely the perfect conclusion."
--A.M. Liebowitz, author of Nightsong

"Laced with inventive world-building, lovable characters, quick-paced action, and incredible magic systems, Shattered Fates is a timely tale of the horrid sacrifices and effort often demanded both when you stand up for what's right, and when you are forced to protect your own."
—Adria Laycraft, NewMyths.com
